Living In Phuket
Phuket, is approximately the same size of Singapore, is the largest inland in Thailand’s largest. The island is connected to mainland Thailand by two bridges. It is situated off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea Phuket is lovely known as “The Pearl of the Andaman”.
In the past Phuket derived its wealth from tin and rubber mined mostly by Chinese settlers around the time of the turn of the century, many influences of which are still visible today in Phukets’ old town around the Dibuk Road Area.. Even earlier in history the island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign ship logs of Portuguese, French, Dutch and English traders. The province now derives much of its income from tourism.
Phuket town
Phuket town is the capital of the province and was once the epicenter of a thriving Chinese community, take a stroll down Dibuk Road and the surrounding streets and it’s easy to see the reminence of this bygone era with the Sino-Portuguese architecture and Chinese shop facades many of which have been carefully preserved by the owners who many of which are the decedents of the original Chinese migrants who come to Phuket during the Tin mining boom of the late 19th and early 20th century.
Along with the old town, Phuket town also have a number of great restaurants, vibrant local night life, Art galleries, markets and a number of modern shopping centers and shopping malls.
Patong
Patong is situated on the middle of the West-Coast. It is the hub of tourism in Phuket, with hundreds of hotels, resorts and guest houses and many bars, restaurants and entertainment venues along Patongs’ famous Bangla Road. Patong Bay is rimed with a white sandy beach where visitor can relax and sunbath or engage in many of the water sports or water based activities that are on offer on the beach. For those raining days there is also a very large shopping mall at the end of Bangla Road where visitors will find many top high street brand shops, art & craft stalls and international restaurants and bars.
The South
To the South of Patong are the beach resort of Karon, Kata, Naiharn and Rawai. Karon and Kata offer the same range of facilities as Patong but are generally quieter and more family oriented and are equally as popular with long term residence as they are the short term tourist.
Karon beach is the next beach South from Patong and boast a 4km long beach and crystal clear water. Naiharn and Rawai are even more popular with the long term visitors and local expat residents, check out Rawai Beach for some of the best, fresh sea food restaurants on the Island at very reasonable prices, there is also the famous Prom Thep Cape which is a popular view point from which to watch the Sunset.
The North
Head North from Patong the most notable beach resort towns are Kamala, Surin and Bangtoa, again these are more family orientated beach spots but are just a short drive from Patong, all are home to many 5 Star resorts including Laguna in Bangtao, they are also popular areas for property buyer with Phukets’ renowned ‘Millionaires Mile’ in Kamala. All of these locations have fantastic beaches, Laem Singh beach should not be missed, it is between Surin and Bangtao and is arguably the most picturesque beach on the Island. If you want to get away from the crowds and visit almost deserted beaches that stretch often further than the eye can see head further north to Nai Yang and Mai Khoa beach, this is the same area that the airport is located.
The East
The East coast of Phuket is often overlooked as it is not possible to view the Sunset and does not have as many pristine beaches as the West Coast, however with only a little bit of exploration it is possible to find some beautiful spots and beaches which are often less crowded than the West coast beaches, head to Cape Panwa which is seen as a new up and coming area of the West coast already there are some 5 star hotels and resort opening on the still little know yet beautiful corner of the Island
